This mug is wheel thrown from a beautiful, red-brown stoneware. After the mug dried to the leather hard stage, several coats of white underglaze were applied to the outside and a pulled handle was added. Once the mug dried, the designs were hand painted in colored underglazes and the mug was bisque fired in the kiln. A speckled turquoise glaze was poured inside and the outside was painted with a thin layer of clear glaze. The mug returned to the kiln a second time for a cone 6 (about 2200F) firing during which the silica in the clay and glaze vitrified and turned to a permanent, durable gloss. In round 3, 22 karat gold luster was applied to match the drip pattern of the underglaze and the mug was fired a third and final time to about 1750F making the gold permanent and pretty durable.
